On March 8, 2011, VNU has held a ceremony to give honorary doctoral degee to Prof. Annick Weiner, former Director Paris university – Sud XI and Prof. Ngo Bao Chau, Chicago university to recognize excellent achievement in scientific actitivies and precious contribution for the development in cooperation with VNU.

Attending the ceremony are Mr. Jean-François Girault, Ambassador of French Republic in Vietnam, Prof.Dr. Mai Trong Nhuan, President of VNU, Prof.Dr. Robert Zimmer, Director of Chicago university.

Prof. Annick Suzor-Weiner is the pioneer in promoting education cooperation relationship and researching between Paris-Sud university and VNU in 2005. With her prestige, she has had many operations and created the most favorable conditions, including the mobilization of business organizations of the French Republic to support scholarships for students, promoting cooperation and success between the Faculty of Science, Paris-Sud University with the University of Technology, VNU, organizing implementing the Joint Programme for Master degree in Micro-Nano and Applications, for Ph.D in Technology between the University of Technology, VNU and the Paris-Sud University under Project 322 of the Ministry of Education and Training, Training Program Links Master Specialization "Information Systems and Technology" in the framework of the project "Center of French Universities in Hanoi. " The cooperative program has contributed to training and fostering effective teaching staff of the University of Technology, training dozens of masters at international level (receiving the Masters degree from Paris-Sud University 11) for the university of Technology training and research units, services and other enterprises in Vietnam. Thanks to her dedication to the development of science and technology in Vietnam, Prof. Annick Suzor-Weiner has been awarded Friendship Medal by the Government of Vietnam in 2005.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof.Dr. Mai Trong Nhuan has stressed that by her enthusiastic attitude, Prof. Annick Suzor-Weiner has contributed a lot to the foundation and development of the university of Technology, VNU.

Prof. Annick Suzor-Weiner has shown her thankfulness when receiving the honorary Ph.D degree. “The awarding of honorary doctorate today is the recognition of the contributions not only for my own, but above all, is the recognition of all the efforts of friendly cooperation between the community of scientists from France and Vietnam also", Prof. Annick Suzor-Weiner said.

Bao Chau is a former student of VNU who has been honored by Fields Prize in 2010, the most prestigious awards in the world mathematics, after successfully demonstrated Langlands fundamental lemma.

Prof. Ngo

Prof. Dr. Mai Trong Nhuan stressed that Prof. Ngo Bao Chau achieving the Fields Prize is not only the pride of Vietnam, it also demonstrates that Vietnamese intelligence can reach the most dazzling glory of the scientific world, even if we face many difficulties in terms of learning and research. Also, this prestigious award is great encouragement for collective staff, scientists, teachers, students and pupils of VNU.

Prof. Ngo Bao Chau is currently working at Chicago University, the field of his current research is algebraic geometry, group theory, individual presentation formats. Before working here, Prof.Ngo Bao Chau was a professor of mathematics at the University of Paris-Sud, working at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Research (Institute for Advanced Study) and the National Center for French Studies (CNRS).

Prof.Ngo Bao Chau is a strategic consultant to VNU. He is also an important bridge of cooperation between VNU and Chicago University.

GS.Ngo Bao Chau has published 14 works in French and English about relevant professional such as fundamental lemma of Jacquet and Ye, balanced form, beam characteristics and morphology of fundamental change and fundamental Lemma of Jacquet and Ye…

End of the ceremony is the exchange talking between Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Giang, Prof.Ngo Bao Chau with the staff and students of VNU.

Answering the question of a student about the efforts to reach the pinnacle of science, Prof. Ngo Bao Chau share that in learning and scientific research, persistence factor is very important. IHe always tells to himself every day that he has to learn something, it could be large or small, but it must be learned properly. "There I was jogging with my friend, a French mathematician named Laurent Lafforgue. He jogged too well and I could hardly catch up with him. Then I asked him the secret of being this strong. He replied that first put the left foot forward right foot, then put his right foot forward left foot”, Prof.. Ngo Bao Chau said.

After hearing the question: Besides the gifted, how should students be taught to become talented as he is? Prof. Ngo Bao Chau shortly answers: “The story of talent training can be briefly explained that helping good students be taught by good teachers and helping good students have the chace to study with each other”.

Being asked about future plans after receiving the Fields Prize, Prof. Ngo Bao Chau said, he will focus on maths, participate in training research and development of mathematics in the country.

Along with Prof. Ngo Bao Chau, the students have some questions to Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Giang.

A student asks that “VNU has signed the memo of working with many companies, large conglomerates, so can you "reveal" about the direction and policies in investment and development in the future so that scientists of VNU may reap more and more great prizes, like honor examples of Prof. Ngo Bao Chau?”

Answering the question, Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Giang stresses that VNU is focusing on strategic deployment tasks, including selecting the branch, which is specialized in proximity to the international level, continues to invest heavily to quickly international level. This is a strategic step of VNU. Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Giang said the human resources to implement the strategy task will be the outstanding scientists. In particular, VNU will invite renowned scientists to participate in world's strategic advisory board including Prof. Ngo Bao Chau.

Another question to Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Giang is the partnering with world renowned universities such as Chicago University will make a breakthrough for the development of VNU in particular and of Vietnam's tertiary education in general, he confirmes, the signing between the Director of Chicago University and VNU is thanks to the great contribution of Prof. Ngo Bao Chau. This is the evidence of changing perceptions about the world of higher education in Vietnam. Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Giang confirmes that VNU will work with Chicago University in the strongest areas of this field such as nanotechnology, leadership training and management...
