Discussion on VNU Development Strategy with National University of Singapore (NUS)
In the morning of June 8, 2012, VNU organized the workshop on Building up VNU Development Strategy with the active participation and discussion from National University of Singapore (NUS).

Attending the workshop were Prof.Dr. Mai Trong Nhuan – VNU President, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Phung Xuan Nha – VNU Permanent Vice President, Prof.Dr. Nguyen Huu Duc – VNU Vice President, Directors of VNU functional departments and representatives of VNU member units. On NUS side, there were Prof.Dr. Lily Kong – Vice President and Ms. Noreen Tan – Associate Director of Office of the Vice President.
In 2011/2012, NUS was ranked 28th in the world and 3rd in Asia by the QS World University Rankings. NUS had a great potential in scientific research with about 6,500 articles published in international journals in 2011, more than 2,000 ongoing research projects and lots of inventions.
Prof.Dr. Mai Trong Nhuan stated that VNU had learnt from NUS’s development model of an international standard university and built up its own development strategy to promote its development and raise its position in the world arena. He also hoped that NUS could share their experiences as well as contribute ideas on VNU development strategy, thence improving the cooperation between the two universities.
Also at the workshop, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Phung Xuan Nha briefly presented VNU development strategy and the processes to form the strategy. Afterwards, Prof.Dr. Lily Kong shared experiences on building up NUS’s development strategy. She also gave valuable comments on VNU development strategy and made useful suggestions on how VNU could successfully implement its development strategy. Also on this occasion, the two sides discussed on new cooperation opportunities between the two universities.
In the afternoon, Prof.Dr.Sc. Vu Minh Giang – VNU Vice President had a meeting with Vietnam’s Minister of Science and Technology, H.E.Mr. Nguyen Quan and Prof.Dr Lily Kong at the office of Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST).
Prof.Dr.Sc Vu Minh Giang emphasized that NUS was a potential partner and he hoped to receive the support from MOST in developing the cooperation with NUS. Also, he stated that VNU would make every effort to become a leading research university in Vietnam and obtain high position in the world arena.
Minister Nguyen Quan conveyed his best congratulations on VNU-NUS cooperation relationship in training and research and stated that MOST would create favorable conditions by supporting and cooperating with VNU in building some laboratories and some training programs for academic staff to help realize VNU’s strategy of building VNU to become a leading research university in Vietnam and bringing VNU to international standards. Minister Nguyen Quan also hoped that NUS would support and share experiences with VNU in training and research.
On her part, Prof.Dr Lily Kong said that to concretize the MoU between VNU and NUS, the two sides would deploy specific cooperation activities in various fields such as biotechnology, economics, technology and information technology. Hence, the two universities would organize staff-student exchange activities, conduct some joint research projects and invite NUS professors and experts to give lectures and share experiences at VNU.
