Vietnam’s Minister of Science and Technology visited VNU
On June 2, 2012, Minister of Science and Technology, H.E.Mr. Nguyen Quan led a delegation to pay a working visit to VNU. The delegation was welcomed by VNU President - Prof.Dr. Mai Trong Nhuan, VNU Vice Presidents, Directors of VNU functional departments and representatives of VNU member units.

At the meeting, Prof.Dr.Sc. Vu Minh Giang – VNU Vice President gave a general report on VNU’s scientific research results and the development orientation for its scientific and technological activities in the future, by which VNU would continuously improve the quality of its faculty staff and researchers; reach the 5-year target of having PhD holders and staff with title of professors/associate professors accounting for 80% and 30% of the total staff, respectively; promote the scientific research and increase the numbers of international articles.
In addition, VNU would continue to develop key sciences including nanotechnology, biotechnology, biomedicine, pharmaceutical chemistry, environmental protection, climate change, sustainable development, etc., aiming at building strong research groups, research centers of excellence, contributing to the development of national science and technology.
 
Also, Prof.Dr. Mai Trong Nhuan stressed that VNU had affirmed its position as a comprehensive multi-disciplinary training and research center of excellence based on international standards with high quality human resources and leading potential in scientific research. Therefore, VNU hoped for the Ministry’s support by entrusting VNU with the Northwest development program. VNU would keep its pioneer momentum in innovating the financial mechanism, organizing the scientific and technological activities through the implementation of some scientific and technological missions with focus on national scientific products, including: Forming the national standard documents on Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Paracel Islands and Spratly Islands; Building the forecast model of hydrometeorology and maritime resources for preventing the natural calamities, exploiting the resources and developing the maritime economy; Developing the nanotechnology applied in medicine, biology, environment and energy; Building and developing some research centers of excellence (Institute for Computational Science and Technology, Research Center of Excellence for Integrated Technology, Site inspection, etc.)
After listening to the discussions among representatives of VNU’s member universities, research institutes and affiliated units with Directors of Ministry’s departments on the proposals for the scientific-technological research activities at VNU, Minister Nguyen Quan acknowledged the efforts and achievements obtained by VNU in the past years and confirmed VNU’s strengths in training, staff development and scientific research activities. He also expressed his support to VNU’s management of the Northwest development program and gave orientation for the scientific and technological activities in the following years.
Minister Nguyen Quan hoped that VNU would continue to strive and develop to become a research university of regional and international standards.
