VNU succeeded in building and analyzing the genomes of 3 members of a Vietnamese family
Following the success in building the genome of a Vietnamese individual announced in early 2014, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lê Sĩ Vinh and his colleagues from VNU University of Engineering and Technology published the results of building and analyzing the genomes of 3 members of a Vietnamese family in an SCI journal early this year, 2015.

The human genome contains over 3 billion nucleotides carrying the entire genetic information which determines human body shape, health and development. In late 2013, Dr. Lê Sĩ Vinh’s research team received the raw data of a Vietnamese individual genome and carried out the building and analyzing of that individual’s genome. In 2014, the team expanded their research to a Vietnamese trio (father, mother and child). The team came up with new concepts and methods of calculation allowing the use of the information relating to the individuals in the same family to enhance accuracy in the research process.

Based on the named trio’s data, the study focused on more in-depth analyses related to those genes that could cause a certain disease and those relating to it. In particular, the results of the trio study can be used as a good set of reference data for further research worldwide. The methods, procedures and results of the study have been internationally reviewed and published in an SCI Journal of Biosciences of the Indian Academy of Sciences in cooperation with Springer Publishing Company, Vol. 3, 2015.

The genome data and research results are allowed to be published and widely used for research and non-profit purposes complying with the international standards for medical research ethics.
The human genome study and analysis for the purpose of early disease detection and diagnosis is now a worldwide trend. Changes in a person’s genome may lead to thousands of different diseases during his or her life. Early detection and diagnosis of diseases will help us effectively prevent and treat them.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lê Sĩ Vinh’s team is planning to cooperate with hospitals in Vietnam to develop applications, build disease analysis and diagnosis system based on genome analysis. This is a potential development trend and will be widely applied in the near future.
