VNU’s Engineering & Technology field ranked 401-500 in the 2020 Times Higher Education World University Rankings by subject
On October 16, 2019, the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine announced the latest World University Rankings 2020 by subject (THE WUR by Subject). Accordingly, only three Vietnamese higher education institutions are included in the list of 1,008 leading universities worldwide in the field of Engineering and Technology by THE. VNU is in the top 401-500.

The 2020 Times Higher Education World University Rankings table for engineering and technology subjects highlights the universities that are leading across general engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering, civil engineering and chemical engineering subjects.

The evaluation criteria of this Ranking table are quite similar to those of THE WUR 2020 World University Rankings, with 13 performance indicators, grouped into 5 areas: Teaching (30%), research (30%), citations (27.5%), internationalization outlook (7.5%) and industry income (5%). The weights for the criteria areas are adjusted by field.

Compared to the common ground in the ranking results of the THE WUR 2020, the field of Engineering & Technology is highly rated for the Research criterion (Research) with 2.1 times more points (18.4 compared to 9.1, and the Citations criterion has a score of 1.7 times (66.1 compared to 38.8) higher than VNU average. The other criteria groups: teaching, industry income and international outlook have the scores equivalent to those of VNU average.

The condition for universities to participate in the THE WUR rankings is to achieve a minimum of 1,000 research papers over the past five years. The University rankings by field also specify the minimum number of articles and the number of lecturers and researchers in the academic fields of educational institutions. Specifically, for the field of Engineering & Technology, the minimum number of articles is 500 for a period of 5 years; at least 4% of academic staff are in the engineering and technology discipline or there are at least 40 academic staff in the engineering and technology discipline.

The Top 10 universities for the Engineering & Technology subject are from 7 prestigious universities in the United States (the California Institute of Technology ranked 1st, Stanford University ranked 2nd, Harvard University ranked 3rd, Massachusetts Institute of Technology ranked 6th, Princeton University ranked 7th, the University of California, Los Angeles and Georgia Institute of Technology share 9th place); two oldest universities in the United Kingdom (Cambridge University ranked 3rd, Oxford University ranked 5th); and one prestigious university from Switzerland, Europe, (ETH Zurich ranked 8th).
