Accordingly, Vietnam has three higher education institutions featured in this ranking, namely Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) ranked No. 1 in Vietnam and placed in Group 801-1,000 best universities globally; Hanoi University of Science and Technology placed in Group 351 – 400 and VNU, Ho Chi Minh City featured in Group 401 – 500.

The Emerging Economies University Rankings use the same 13 performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings, but their weightings are specially recalibrated to reflect the development priorities of the emerging economy universities as follows: Teaching (30%), Research (30%), Citations (20%), International outlook (10%), and Industry income (10%).

The THE Emerging Economies University Rankings 2021 includes only institutions in countries or regions classified by the London Stock Exchange's Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE) Group as "advanced emerging," "secondary emerging" or "frontier."

The 606 universities ranked this year include 73 first-time entrants.

China continues to dominate the THE Emerging Economies University Rankings 2021 with 91 institutions ranked, including Tsinghua University, Peking University and Zhejiang University, among others; followed by Russia with 48 higher education institutions, Taiwan with 38 higher education institutions and South Africa with 11 higher education institutions.

Previously, on October 28, 2020, VNU had three academic disciplines ranked No.1 in Vietnam by the THE World University Rankings by Subject, as follows:

- Computer Sciences, evaluated for the first time, was placed in Group 501-600 globally and ranked 1st in Vietnam;

- Physical Sciences was included in Group 601-800 globally and ranked 1st in Vietnam; and

- Engineering and Technology featured in Group 401 - 500 globally and ranked 1st   in Vietnam.

In addition, on March 4, 2021, VNU had 5 disciplines ranked by the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021. Specifically:

Computer Science and Information Systems was listed in Group 601 – 650 globally and ranked 2nd in Vietnam, after Hanoi University of Science and Technology;

Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering regained its position in Group 451-500 globally, after Hanoi University of Science and Technology;

Mathematics was placed in Group 401 – 450 globally and ranked 1st in Vietnam, followed by Hanoi University of Science and Technology;

Physics & Astronomy, the only discipline in Vietnam ranked in 2021, was featured in Group 501-550 globally; and

Business and Management Studies, the only academic discipline in Vietnam ranked, was listed in Group 501 - 550 globally.
