11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis:
(1) English geological textbooks have almost the same organization as Vietnamese geological textbooks, however, Vietnamese geological textbooks do not have the concluding part in a chapter; (2) English and Vietnamese textbook writers use declarative clauses at high frequency (99% and 100% respectively); (3) Material and relational processes are used at high frequency in geological textbooks; (4) English textbook writers use verbal process at a higher percentage than Vietnamese textbook writers (12.4% and 8.2% respectively); (5) Vietnamese textbook writers use a larger number of active voice constructions than that of the English ones (93.8% and 80.5% respectively); (6) linguistic differences can be found in the realizations of Theme, the nonexistence of “anticipatory It” in Vietnamese geological textbooks; (7) English textbook writers use non restrictive clauses as marked Themes.
12. Practical applicability, if any: the research outcomes have pointed out the generic structure and linguistic features of geological textbooks in English and Vietnamese as well as generic and linguistic similarities and differences between English and Vietnamese geological textbooks. The research results to some extent have contributed to the teaching English in general and teaching English for geology in particular.
