11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis:
11.1. The folk legends of Nghệ-country are one aspect of the storehouse of Vietnamese folk legends, in general, contributing greater quality and clarity to the genre of legends in the current of Vietnamese folk culture. Today, the legends of Nghệ-country basically only exist in written texts, very rarely existing in their primitive oral form. One of the reasons leading to the process of “fossilization” of legends in the folk life of Nghệ Tĩnh is the fault-lines/cracks in the tradition of transmission to subsequent generations and the particular re-creation of legends through festivals and the tangible cultural festivals.
11.2. The genre of legends in the cultural space of Nghệ-country gives special expression to particular traits of the genre. First, space in the legends of Nghệ- country is compound space in terms of both property and function: fixed space – movable space; originary space – secondary space. Second, nature of time in the legends of Nghệ-country is complex with history being concrete and fixed; time becomes multi-layered through the process of oral transmission; finally time is flexible and cyclical. Third, the structure of Nghê-country folk legends is open, multi-stratum including an array of levels of existence (from details, to motif, to the complete tale). Fourth, the role of the “character” in Nghệ-country folk legends, in part, enhances the legend’s development in regional cultural space by way of appearing under the control of a localization process and the phenomenon of two, interconnected characters. Thus, there are two transformative tendencies: the making sacred and the making commonplace become central, and particular, to the nature and development of the character in legends that we discovered in the storehouse of Nghệ-country legends.
11.3. All symbolic traits related to the particularities of the folk legends of Nghệ- country above originated and developed under the influence of the particular culture of Nghệ Tĩnh region. Regional culture entered into the details, motif, and manifestation of the Nghệ-country folk legends.
11.4. In the relationship between legends and festivals, we recognize that folk festivals have had the tendency of becoming independent of legends. This tendency created conditions for the rebirth of legends on the foundation of the festivals and their symbols and folk rituals. One aspect of the new legends recently introduced is to explain, to depict folk performances and festivals. The fast decline of statistical data about tangible cultural vestiges connected to legends of Nghệ-country reflects the decline in quality of legend transmission, as each of these vestiges is a temporary refuge for legends on its oral transmission itinerary.
12.Practiacal applicability: This dissertation may be consulted in lecture and scientific research relating to folk literature. Moreover, the dissertation is also a basis by which cultural officials may implement restoration of communal houses, temples and traditional festivals connected to local legends.
