11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis

The thesis has new theoretical and practical findings and contributions.

In terms of theoretical aspect, the thesis developed a Diagnostic Framework of EVFTA's potential impacts based on international economic theories, FTA-related theories and experimental studies on impacts of FTAs. This Impact Diagnosing Framework can be applied to assess the potential impact of other FTAs Vietnam is negotiating or has signed but not yet effective.

In terms of practical aspect, the thesis analyzed changes in value, proportion, growth rate and pattern of trade between Vietnam and the EU, categorizing groups of products and markets to support Vietnam to design strategies in trading with the EU in the future. The thesis adopted qualitative and quantitative methods (the SMART and gravity model), and different research tools to diagnose and assess both the static and dynamic potential impacts of the EVFTA on overall bilateral trade, trade in eighteen groups of sectors and two types of goods between Vietnam and the EU. On that ground, the thesis pointed out the benefits, opportunities as well as difficulties and challenges of EVFTA to Vietnam, focusing on the opportunities and challenges by market, group of sector, and product including garments and pharmaceuticals and drew out implications for both the Vietnamese government and enterprises.

12. Practical applicability, if any:

The thesis results can be used as a reference for the Ministry of Industry and Trade and Ministry of Planning and Investment in developing strategies, action plans and policies to prepare for the implementation of the EVFTA.

The Vietnamese enterprises can also use the thesis results to build up business strategies in preparation for the integration with the EU, as well as take up opportunities and overcome challenges from the EVFTA in the future.

13. Further research directions, if any

Analyze of the impact of the EVFTA on trade in goods between Vietnam and the EU, using the import demand elasticity, import substitution elasticity and export supply elasticity of the country similar to Vietnam.

Develop a model to assess the impact of both non-tariff and tariff barriers under the EVFTA framework on trade in goods between Vietnam and the EU.

Evaluate the sectoral impact of the EVFTA on Vietnam - EU trade.

Apply the impact diagnostic framework to assess the impact of some other FTAs Vietnam has signed but not yet effective, for example Vietnam - European Asian Economic Union or some FTAs Vietnam is negotiating such as RCEP.
