11. Summary of the new results of the thesis:

- The thesis is the first scientific research that studies overall, deeply and comprehensively the theoretical issues of settlement of continental shelf disputes; the legal basics of settlement of continental shelf disputes, particularly UNCLOS and cases ruled by international tribunals; principles and means of resolving continental shelf disputes under international law; the assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of those means.

- The thesis is the first research that gives and evaluates new means of resolving the disputes over the continental shelf apart from the diplomatic means and adjudicative means.

- The thesis is the first research that comprehensively evaluates the practices of resolution of continental shelf disputes.

- The thesis is the first research that offers solutions and recommendations to improve international law on the settlement of continental shelf disputes.

- The thesis is the first research that classifies the South China Sea disputes in connection with the disputes over continental shelf; the impact of the political and diplomatic context, particularly ambitions, strategies and tactics of China, on resolving the disputes over the continental shelf between Vietnam and relevant countries.

- The thesis is the first research that offers overall solutions to resolve disputes over the continental shelf between Vietnam and relevant countries.

- The thesis is the first research that offers specific solutions to resolve each kind of the continental shelf dispute between Vietnam and relevant countries.

12. Practical applicability (if any): The research results of the thesis can possibly be applied to the settlement of Vietnam's continental shelf disputes. Additionally, the research results of the thesis can be used as a useful reference for government agencies, policy makers, and managers in the policy formulation and policy implementation of sea and ocean law as well as research organizations and educational institutions in research and teaching international law and marine law.

13. Further research orientation (if any): To research processes, procedures for resolving disputes over the continental shelf; strategy and tactics of the countries in the South China Sea in the settlement of disputes over the continental shelf; to continue to study the overall solution as well as specific solutions to resolving Vietnam’s continental shelf disputes.
