11. Summary of new findings of the thesis:

- The thesis has listed, described and had contrastive analysis in details on using all formulas to express refusals of offers and its refusal strategies by native speakers of American English and Vietnamese to point out similarities and differences in two languages.

- The thesis has listed, described and had contrastive analysis in details on using all formulas to express refusals of invitations and its refusal strategies by native speakers of American English and Vietnamese to point out similarities and differences in two languages.

- The thesis has compared the impact of power and gender factor on the choice of strategies for rejecting invitations by native speakers of American English and Vietnamese.

12. Practical applicability:

- The research results partly contribute to compile Vietnamese language books for foreigners, English language books for the Vietnamese people, translation aspect as well as preserve the purity of Vietnamese.

13. Further research directions:

- Studying about non- verbal expressions of refusals such as head shaking, silence, frowning, shrugging, and facial expressions instead of verbal expressions in communication.

- Studying utterances of refusing offers or invitations in natural language materials appearing in many social contexts with different communication respondents, instead of in literature, short stories, Vietnamese dramas, foreign television films.

- Comparing the choices of expressing formulas and factors towards refusals of offers and invitations with those of demands, requests and proposals.
