11. Summary of the new findings of the dissertation

Applying the theory of socialization process in children’s personality, the thesis studies the effects of comics on the personality formation and development of Vietnamese children. The wide popularity and interest of Vietnamese children in comics has proved the appeal of this literary genre. The effects on every age, with typical characteristics in physiological and psychological development, are also different.

- Based on the research of target groups, the dissertation has discovered the current situation of reading comics among children in Vietnam. A majority of Vietnamese children read Japanese comics, followed by Vietnamese comics and comics from other countries.

- In Vietnam, reading comics is one of the most popular forms of entertainment among children. They are quite proactive in buying and choosing comics and lack consultation from their family and the school in comics selection.

- Comics have positive effects on children: it is a form of entertainment which makes them happy; a number of characters with outstanding personalities have become favorite characters for many children. Through the colorful animation world, numerous messages have been conveyed to provide young readers with better understanding about life and the surrounding world, and to stimulate their creativity…

- Comics have negative effects such as a waste of time and money, health problems. The irrelevant language and images also affect the cognitive process, communication and behavior of children…

- By analyzing the strengths, weaknesses, challenges and opportunities of Vietnamese comics in relation to foreign comics, the thesis also proposed a number of solutions to the development of Vietnamese comics in the future.

12. Applicability

- The results from this dissertation can be used as references in the study of issues related to comics.

- The given recommendations will assist parents in the selection of suitable stories for their children.

- The current strength and limitations, opportunities and challenges of Vietnamese comics, together with useful suggestions for managers, publishers and authors, are also stated in this study, in order to create a distinct brandname for Vietnamese comics.
