Teaching and research in a globalized world
What are students looking for in today’s globalized world? They are seeking more opportunities to study and gain work experience overseas, to be exposed to the teaching and research of internationally renowned scholars, and to establish networks with international and local employers in order to ensure their future success.

The College of Economics-Vietnam National University, Hanoi (COE-VNU) understands the interest that students have in gaining an international study experience. But we also understand that many students do not have the funds to actually go overseas and study. To meet this demand we have established cooperative relationships with a number of universities across the world with the aim of developing international joint training programs, at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, in collaboration with the partner institution.

Such programs are usually delivered by COE in cooperation with a foreign university. The majority of the program is taught in Vietnam by COE professors and guest lecturers from the partner institution. At times students also have the opportunity to study abroad for a period of 6 months to 2 years. Graduates always receive an internationally recognized award from the partner institution, thus enabling them to obtain a degree from a foreign university, even though they undertook all of their studies in Vietnam.

Two very successful examples of such partnerships at COE are the joint Master Degree in International Project Management and Economic Expertise run in conjunction with Paris 12 University in France, and the joint Bachelor of Business Administration run with Troy State University in US.

The training program with Paris 12 University commenced in 2006 as a pilot project funded by the French and Vietnamese Governments, with the goal of developing a quality Masters course to meet the demands of the Vietnamese economy. The first intake of students are now completing their studies, with recruitment for the second intake well underway. Similarly, the training program with Troy State University commenced in 2004. Since then over 50 students have participated in the program, with interest building every year. This year’s information day attracted more than 80 people, up from 30 the year before.

A crucial part of these programs, for both the students and lecturers, is the transferral of technology and knowledge from our partner institutions to COE. This consists of having foreign lecturers give seminars on their areas of expertise; encouraging foreign scholars to undertake joint research with COE lecturers and outstanding students; seeking advice on curriculum development; receiving high quality teaching materials; and conducting short training courses to enhance the teaching quality and expertise of lecturers.

These training programs therefore provide holistic benefits to students by giving them a quality international learning experience at the right price; to lecturers by providing opportunities for professional development; and to administrative staff by building up transferable project management skills.

COE is currently evaluating all of its partnerships and will shortly seek to strengthen key relationships. International joint training programs will feature prominently in this plan, due to their ability to address many of COE’s needs in research, teaching and learning. Providing for the needs of students and lecturers in this changing world can often be difficult and international joint training programs provide a valuable contribution to addressing this challenge.
