Bright jewel of mathematics

In the early years of the 20th century, German universities are leading the world in breakthrough researches in the field of natural sciences, especially physics and chemistry. Therefore, the Academy of Sciences Royal Swedish was also frequently named for the German scientists in the Nobel Prize ceremony. Likewise, Silicon Valley has become the cradle of advanced technology and the Chicago University became the center of the Nobel Prize in economics.

According to published data, in 2006, the Chicago University has spent over 305 million dollars for scientific research. Chicago University also monitors the activities of 12 research institutes and 113 research centers. Of these is the Institute of the East (including a museum and research center in eastern region) owned and operated by the University of Chicago. Besides, the Chicago University also owns a number of national resource centers.

Chicago University’s mathematics department started its operation since October 1892. The first Dean is Mr. Eliakim Hastings Moore, who is also an associate professor with Northwestern University. Mr. Moore immediately appointed Oskar Bolza and Heinrich Maschke to work with him and they have become the basic kernel of the mathematics department during the period 1892 to 1908.

From 1892 to 1910, only 39 students graduated in mathematics from Chicago university. From 1910 to 1927 the training is deveoped more strongly, which had 115 Ph.D.-level mathematics. In the end of this period, Chicago University became a major training the doctoral mathematics in America.

One of the first projects conducted by the mathematics department is working with World Fair to hold international congress of mathematicians in Chicago in 1893. The success of this project has shown that the Chicago University’s math and science department have the capacity to become organized on a regular basis of the congress of mathematicians in the world. The disclosure of information about the conference is held under the help of the New York Mathematical Society, and shortly thereafter, with the strong vote of Moore, the association was later renamed American Mathematical Society States.

We expect him to work at the Department of Mathematics has a long history and reputation the world. The Chairman of Mathematics department, Prof. Peter Constantin expressed that Prof. Ngo Bao Chau has demonstrated great ability in mathematics when he successfully demonstrated a problem that not any mathematician can prove in 30 years. This is a purely mathematical problem, but it is related to life domains, including high-energy physics, computer science and cryptography.

Chicago University now has 7 scientists who have won 7 out of 48 Fields prize ever awarded.
