President Trần Đại Quang attended the ceremony and delivered a welcome speech.

Attending the ceremony were also Minister of Education and Training Phùng Xuân Nhạ, representatives from the Party Central Committee Office, the President’s Office, the Government Office, ministries and foreign embassies in Vietnam.

VNU President Nguyễn Kim Sơn also attended the ceremony and delivered a congratulation speech.

 Speaking at the ceremony, VNU University of Science Rector Nguyễn Văn Nội reviewed the university’s development milestones and recent prominent achievements.

VNU University of Science, formerly Hanoi University, was established in 1956 with its first intake of 430 students and Prof. Ngụy Như Kon Tum as its first rector.

Over the 60 years of development, the university has trained a lot of high quality human resources in natural sciences, social sciences and humanities for the national construction and defense.

Addressing the ceremony attendees, President Trần Đại Quang remarked, “Over the 60 years of continuous efforts, the University of Science has become the nation’s leading training and research centre in natural sciences”.

The President also requested the university to well implement the following:

First, further improving training and research quality to train top quality human resources for the national and international labour market.

Second, boosting scientific research focusing on three major orientations: international standard fundamental science research, applied technology research and actual development research. In addition, VNU should select research priorities, build strong research teams and develop highly competitive interdisciplinary sciences.

Third, taking particular care of developing faculty and staff, designing appropriate policies to attract high profile lecturers to the university to work as well as expanding external relations to create favourable conditions for scientists to conduct productive research; investing comprehensively to modernize infrastructure, teaching and learning facilities to meet the need of improving training quality and international integration.

Fourth, promoting the development of appropriate cultural and academic environment for the training of all-rounded human resources.

Fifth, building strong social, political and professional organizations to enhance political, academic, professional qualities of faculty, staff and students.

Speaking at the ceremony, VNU President Nguyễn Kim Sơn emphasized, “Hanoi University’s spiritual value has always been conserved over the past 60 years; that is consistently building a research-oriented university; maintaining a leading creative role in specialized fundamental, interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary research activities to produce high quality scientific and technological products for the national construction and defense”.

Also at the ceremony, President Trần Đại Quang presented the Ho Chi Minh Order to VNU University of Science. This is the second time the university has been honored with this noble award.
