The Paris Agreement 2015 on climate change and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 create and promote the transformation of the existing development model to a new one of low-carbon, resiliency and sustainability. It is a great opportunity for the nations worldwide, especially, the developing countries, to consider adopting a more sustainable development model in the context of global challenges.

Initiated by VNU, Hanoi Forum is an international academic conference that encourages the realization of sustainable development through scientific research, technology and international academic exchange. In addition, the Forum will also discuss practical socio-economic issues in Vietnam to provide the central government, ministries, industry sectors and local governments with relevant policy consultation.

Selecting "Adapting to Climate Change", the 13^th of the 17 sustainable development goals, as the focus of discussion entitled “Towards Sustainable Development – Response to Climate Change for Sustainability and Security”, Hanoi Forum 2018 encourages interdisciplinary studies as well as incorporates science and technology to improve the effectiveness of climate change response, especially, in the Asia – Pacific region.

Hanoi Forum 2018 aims to bring together scientists, leading researchers, policy makers and international organizations from around the world. In addition to its five specialist sections, the Forum will also hold two policy dialogues on the natural resources management in the Mekong Delta and urbanization; construction and development of the Red River Delta.

Over the past years, VNU has pioneered in offering a Master's degree in Climate Change and Sustainability Science, as well as promoting scientific research in these areas. With the initiative of co-organizing the Hanoi Forum with the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies, VNU hopes to contribute scientifically to coping with global challenges and offer a forum for policy dialogue based on scientific research as well as further promote international academic cooperation in this pretty new field.
