Soils under stress: nutrient recycling and agricultural sustainability in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam
This report is based on joint research between Southeast Asian Universities, East-West Center, University of Hawaii and University of Hanoi. The farmers of Nguyen Xa village, Thai Binh province, Vietnam, achieve yields of 80% of the genetically capable yield under optimum conditions. The objective of the study was to undertake an input-output analysis of nutrients to determine if existing practices of land use were sustainable in the long term. Following an overview of the village and surrounding area papers cover: the evolution of agricultural production and resource management; soil characteristics and changes in their chemical properties; contribution of sediment to nutrient flow; azolla production; nutrient balances in relation to land-use sustainability; subsidiary enterprises and their effects on agricultural production; potential for further increase in agricultural production; and finally land-use sustainability.
