Mr. Herman Van Rompuy has contributed to the stable development of EU in the difficult periods of economic crisis and arising political issues as well as to the development of cooperative linkages between EU and other countries in the world in politics, education, trade and investment, etc. for the global common development.
Enhancing the comprehensive cooperation with worldwide prestigious universities, research institutes and educational organizations, including the EU ones has become a key step in the development strategy of VNU. Up to now, VNU has set up the cooperative linkages with many EU prestigious universities.
“We do believe that the visit of President of the European Council today, as a VNU’s Honorary Doctor, will be the important milestone and motivation for promoting the existing effective cooperation between EU universities and VNU as well as strengthening the relationship between Vietnam and European Union”, said Prof.Dr. Mai Trọng Nhuận.
H.E. Mr. Herman Van Rompuy expressed his deep thanks for the warm welcome from VNU leaders, staff and students.
“It is a great honor for me to visit VNU. And it is a great pleasure to be here in Hanoi, a city of more than a thousand years old, and speak to you, students, representing the young generations of Vietnam and the hope for the future.”
He continued, “I am witnessing Vietnam both as a very old and very young country… The people of Vietnam paid a high price for its freedom and independence. Today, you are a symbol of the sunrise. History is made by Vietnamese… We are living in a world of change and all countries depend on each other to develop.”
EU is one of the leading and important partners of Vietnam in various fields including politics-diplomatics, development cooperation, trade-investment, science-technology, and responses to the global challenges. In the past years, Vietnam-EU cooperation has witnessed the comprehensive development, especially the EU-Vietnam Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) signed and the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations started on June 2012 have become an important milestone for the intensive and practical development of Vietnam–EU partnership. This first official visit of President of Europe Council has confirmed such comprehensive strategic development.
The visit also shows EU’s appreciation of the rising role and position of Vietnam in the region and in the world and affirms the desire to strengthen the multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam; to study the socio-economic development and the successful policies on innovation and international integration of Vietnam; to exchange the measures for bilateral cooperation promotion within the broader cooperation framework of the PCA; to discuss international and regional issues of mutual concern; to inform the methods used by EU to deal with the Europe’s common currency crisis, and discuss ways for strengthening the cooperation relationship between the two sides at the international and regional multilateral forums.
Clearly, the achievements of the partnership between Vietnam and EU in general and between VNU and EU academic organizations in particular will lay a solid foundation for the two sides to promote the intensive, practical and effective cooperation in education, science and technology.
VNU’s Honorary Doctor is a noble title conferred to leading scientists, distinguished politicians, outstanding socialists and those who have special contributions to the development of VNU, namelyKazakhstan President, H.E.
