VNU online primary education support channel: A major contribution to the digital transformation in education and training
On September 15, 2021, VNU held the launching ceremony of an online primary education support channel. This channel is to support teachers, parents and primary school students in disadvantaged areas in particular and in localities across the country in general. Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) provides databases and technology platforms while VNU is responsible for developing professional content.

The ceremony was virtually held on the Zoom platform at VNU and the local bridge points nationwide.

Attending the ceremony at VNU were Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Doan - Former Member of the Party Central Committee, Former Vice State President, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Association for Promoting Education; Mr. Ngo Dien Hy - Deputy General Director of VNPT; Mr. Vu Minh Duc - Director of the Teacher and Education Administrator Bureau, Ministry of Education and Training; VNU Board of Presidents, representatives of VNU’s Office of the President, departments and units; representatives of the leaders of People's Committees, Departments of Education and Training of provinces and cities at the local bridge points.

VNU’s President has assigned VNU University of Education (UEd) to be a liaison institution in implementing the channel’s professional content as well as connecting the network of national education. After the launch, the online primary education support channel will operate regularly and continuously at the address: http://hotrotieuhoc.vnu.edu.vn, even when the Covid-19 pandemic is under control.

As a nonprofit activity, the channel will provide direct support and instant interaction for teachers, students, administrators, parents, and the community, appropriate for the primary education level, following the new general education curriculum, through a variety of activities.

The online primary education support channel is developed in the spirit of educational responsibility and social sharing in the direction of an open educational platform, enriching endogenous data by attracting the contributions of education experts, teachers and other social resources.

By building and implementing the channel, VNU aims to spread the individualized education philosophy through the counseling process conducted on the channel. The primary education process is prioritized towards comprehensive educational development. Teaching methods and techniques using modern technology and equipment are also updated for teachers, parents and the community.

Addressing the event, VNU President Le Quan emphasized that, pioneering in the national education system, VNU built the online primary education support channel in the spirit of implementing its social responsibility in promoting the digital transformation of education as well as contributing to the improvement of the Vietnam general education quality.

“One of the goals of the online primary education support channel is to form a forum for sharing experiences between teachers and leading experts in education; creating a space to connect primary school teachers, helping them to master technology and be creative; sharing and spreading primary education issues in society as well as promoting digital transformation associated with the foundation of educational and pedagogical science," said VNU President Le Quan.

In the coming time, VNU aims to implement capacity building programs and innovate teaching methods for teachers nationwide from high school to university, especially general education. In addition, the online primary education support channel will focus on sharing learning materials, teaching and learning tools, and grasping the training needs of teachers in localities to offer appropriate training courses.

Rector of VNU UEd Nguyen Quy Thanh, representative of the liaison institution in charge of professional content of the online primary education support channel, remarked that the web-based channel was designed for primary education providers and stakeholders, especially teachers and parents, to access quickly and easily. With the participation of leading experts in education, the channel will provide teachers and parents with online advice, support and guidance related to online teaching and learning skills, age psychology, etc. Experts in educational psychology, educational technology and assessment will support both directly and indirectly in an active and positive manner under many forms such as large group counseling (livestreaming), organizing on-demand thematic massive open online courses (MOOCs) as well as face-to-face consulting activities.

The channel will provide orientation materials, support teachers in lesson and lecture planning; provide guiding documents to organize educational activities for teachers and parents; introduce and provide primary education open resources. Technology application support solutions with detailed implementation instructions will also be provided in a most complete way.

The online primary education support channel is built in order to promote parents’ role, accompany schools in educating their children, as well as help them to access the educational theories from experts for students’ balanced and comprehensive development in accordance with the new educational context.

To build and maintain a foundation of useful learning materials to support primary education, VNU has mobilized a team of experts both inside and outside its members. These are experts in education and educational technology, psychological counselors, officials and educational administrators as well as senior teachers who participated in the development of the general education program and the 2018 detailed curriculum as well as in textbooks designing according to the new program.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Doan highly appreciated the building and implementing of the online primary education support channel. She believed that the channel would not only improve the comprehensive capacity of teachers and students but also have special significance in the digital transformation of education and training.

“The capacity of teachers, especially primary school teachers, plays a key role in the education system, determining the success of the education and training reform in accordance with Resolution 29-NQ/TW,” Chairwoman of the Vietnam Association for Promoting Education Nguyen Thi Doan emphasized.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Doan noted that, in order to effectively maintain and operate the online primary education support channel, VNU, VNPT and related units need to closely coordinate in the development of technology foundation, ensuring good internet infrastructure and transmission.

Within the framework of the activities of the online primary education support channel, on September 3 and September 12, 2021, VNU organized professional seminars on getting 1st graders psychologically and intellectually ready for entering the school year in the context of online learning as well as on some basic pedagogical skills for online teaching at primary schools.

Also at the ceremony, VNU joined the country in donating 1 billion VND to the "Waves and computers for children" Program launched by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, in order to support pupils and students with difficult circumstances and a lack of online learning facilities to equally access education.
