As in the previous years, the study saw no change in measurement and evaluation tools as the team only updated the database of more than 100,000 most cited scientists (from Scopus data sources) and their ranking was based on important criteria, such as composite score, total citations (excluding self-quotes), Hirsch h-index, Schreiber hm-index, number of citations for articles published as a single author, number of citations for articles as the main author (first author and corresponding author), and last author, etc.

Scientists are divided into 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields (disciplines/specialties).

By order in this ranking, Vietnam has 5 scientists including Prof. Dr. Sc. Nguyen Dinh Duc from VNU, Hanoi ranked 5,949th globally (96th globally in Engineering) and No. 1 among the listed Vietnamese scientists; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Hoang Son from VNU, Hanoi ranked 6,766th globally; Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hung from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology ranked 6,818th; Prof. Dr. Bui Tien Dieu from Duy Tan University ranked 9,488th; and Prof. Dr. Vo Xuan Vinh from the University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City ranked 9,528th, featured in the world’s 10,000 top scientists.

Prof. Dr. Sc. Nguyen Dinh Duc, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hung and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Hoang Son have been featured in the world's 10,000 best scientists for three consecutive years (2019, 2020, 2021).

This year, 28 Vietnamese scientists working in Vietnam have been listed among the world’s 100,000 most influential scientists by PLOS Biology.
