ICSEA2022 - Sustainability in the Environment and Agriculture

The International Conference on Sustainability in the Environment and Agriculture (ICSEA2022) was successfully held in November 11-12, 2022 at VNU Vietnam Japan University.

In the morning of November 12, 2022, the ICSEA2022 continued with two parallel sessions, namely 1) Environmental Sustainability and 2) Sustainable Agriculture. Of which, the Parallel Session 1: Environmental Sustainability with 10 presentations was chaired by Prof. Yutaka Sakakibara, Waseda University and Dr. Nguyen Thi An Hang, VNU Vietnam Japan University. Presentations focused on various aspects related to Environmental Science and Technology, sharing ideas, technological solutions, and policies on pollution remediation, environmental management and protection. Specifically, presentations have depicted the current status of environmental pollution (surface water, groundwater, soil, air, municipal solid waste, etc.) with hot environmental issues (groundwater and soil pollution by heavy metals, air pollution by troposphere ozone, PM2.5, and NOx gases, etc.) in Vietnam and Lao PDR.  Presentations have also proposed advanced technologies (adsorption, advanced oxidation, etc.), which were based on the recycling of industrial waste (e.g., mining) or agricultural by-products (e.g., sawdust, clam shells) as environmental materials for wastewater purification, in combination with the recovery of nutrients (struvite) from wastewater, towards promoting a circular economy. Notably, bioremediation (e.g., biochar, constructed wetlands, environmental microbiology) for the treatment of wastewater and contaminated soils were mentioned by several presentations. Besides, there were some presentations on the air environment, including both experimental and modeling studies.

With the votes of delegates attending Parallel Session 1: Environmental Sustainability, 01 Best Oral Presentation Award was presented to Dr. Pham Bao Yen, VNU University of Science, with a presentation titled "Study on soil microbial communities surrounding the multi-metal mine in Thai Nguyen province". Parallel Session 1 of the ICSEA2022 with the fruitful discussion, has revealed many interesting issues, initially forming a network among scholars, scientists, and students working in the field of environmental science and engineering.

The Parallel Session 2: Sustainable agriculture with 7 presentations was chaired by Prof. Eriko Yasunaga, The University of Tokyo and Dr. Hoang Thi Thu Duyen, VNU Vietnam Japan University. Presentations focused on various aspects related to crops, fertilizers, soil quality aiming at promoting environmental friendly agriculture that well adapts to negative effects of climate change. Specifically, presentations have presented models using GIS data to generate scenarios in rice cultivation in Mekong river delta for instrution and drought adaptation; or demonstrate evidents in term of rice genetics to adapt to environmental conditions; discuss biofertilizers to accelerate maize’s adaptation to increasing temperature. With the votes of participants in Parallel Session 2: Sustainable Agriculture, 01 Best Oral Presentation Award was presented to Dr. Ta Kim Nhung, VNU Vietnam Japan university, with a presentation titled " GWAS using O. rufipogon population identified a leaf derived signal regulation grain size an its role in rice domestication ". Parallel Session 2 of the ICSEA2022 with the fruitful discussion, has revealed many interesting issues, initially forming a network among scholars, scientists, and students working in the field of Agricultural Sciences. One participant from University of Science and Technology of Hanoi – USTH (Vietnam France University) proposed to enlarge the scale of the conference to attract more participants next year.

The ICSEA2022 organizing committees deeply appreciate the participation and contributions of all the keynote speakers, authors, and participants of the ICSEA2022, to whom we owe the success of the conference.
