2022 - a memorable year with many breakthrough achievements and outstanding events for VNU
The year 2022 recorded Vietnam’s recovery from adapting to the context to constantly innovating in all aspects of life to turn challenges into development opportunities. This has been a memorable year with many breakthrough achievements and outstanding events for VNU.

On May 19, 2022, VNU’s headquarters was relocated to its Hoa Lac campus, marking the transformation in all aspects of organization and operation. The opening ceremony of VNU’s first academic year in Hoa Lac, held on October 23, 2022, marked the end of the three-hundred-day campaign to prepare well for welcoming students to study at VNU Hoa Lac campus as well as to start a new phase with many aspirations and development opportunities.

This historic event is an opportunity for generations of VNU lecturers and students to share their joys and together nurture their faith in a green, smart and sustainable VNU town - a desired destination for students, a common home for lecturers and staff as well as a venue for development cooperation of businesses. With the new development space, VNU is strongly thriving, being worthy of the trust of the Party, State, and People.

On September 23, 2022, the University of Law was established as a VNU’s member university by being upgraded from VNU School of Law under Decision No. 1124/QĐ-TTg of the Prime Minister. On November 9, 2022, the Prime Minister signed Decision No. 1376/QĐ-TTg on transferring the Construction Hospital under the Ministry of Construction to Vietnam National University, Hanoi to be reorganized into VNU University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. These two strategic decisions help VNU complete its development model, improve the efficiency and quality of training, research, technology transfer, and community service in the fields of legal science and health science.

In the past year, VNU has paid special attention to human resources development, especially highly qualified scientific staff and its next generation. A number of outstanding policies on working mechanisms, finance and healthcare conditions for professors, associate professors, young scientists, and strong and potential research groups have been implemented, playing an important role in retaining, attracting, and developing VNU contingent.

Many VNU scientists continued to maintain their leading positions in Vietnam among the world’s most influential scientists. Specifically, VNU was the first Vietnamese higher education institution presented with the Recognition of Improvement Award by the QS World University Rankings. Also, in 2022, VNU was ranked 758th among the world’s top 800 universities for the first time according to Webometrics rankings by Cybermetrics Labs.

VNU owes the above achievements to the efforts of its lecturers, scientists, students, and the support of VNU former lecturers, leaders, and managers over the years; the attention, and close direction of the Party and State leaders; the help of ministries, central agencies and local governments; and the companionship of international partners, businesses and alumni. VNU always acknowledges and appreciates these valuable supports.

In 2023, VNU is determined to innovate and promote its pioneering position and role in training, scientific research, technology transfer, innovation, and community service. Following the orientation of its Party Committee, VNU will focus on implementing a number of key tasks in the coming year.

The first task is to reform university administration. VNU will review and evaluate 30 years of organization and operation to continue to complete its model; strengthen decentralization and implement an autonomous mechanism combined with goal-based governance and digital transformation to ensure sustainable development.

The second task is to maintain and gradually improve the scale and the quality of training in a number of fields, especially basic sciences; orient the restructuring of specializations at training institutions to meet the requirements of socio-economic development in the new context of university autonomy; launch a comprehensive educational model for full-time students in Hoa Lac, which emphasizes moral education, traditional cultural values, aesthetic values, physical and health foundations associated with international integration capacity to innovate, make a difference and add values for students, affirming VNU’s role and position.

The third one is to focus on investing in and developing strong research groups at regional and international levels, serving as the nucleus to strengthen VNU's scientific and technological capacity; promote cooperation with enterprises to bring research and invention results to life to directly serve the socio-economic development of the country.

The fourth task is to mobilize all resources from the State budget, public-private partnership, aid and funding sources to implement the plan of creating a green, smart and sustainable VNU town.

Welcoming the new year, VNU is ready to thrive.

On behalf of VNU's leaders, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the leaders of the Party, the State, and the Government for their attention, guidance and facilitation for VNU’s development; to the concerned ministries, sectors and agencies for their support and collaboration with VNU; to domestic and foreign partners for their effective cooperation with VNU over the past year; and to all VNU’s staff, lecturers, scientists and students for their contributions to the development of VNU.

Wishing you all a healthy, happy, and successful new year!
