Peking University was established in 1898 under the name Royal Peking University, is a first National University in modern Chinese history and is one of leading universities in China. The university consists of 30 colleges and 12 departments. At present, Peking University has 216 research institutions and research centres, including 2 national engineering research centres, 81 key national disciplines, 12 national key laboratories. Late 20th century, the Chinese government has set priorities for Peking University to build a world-class university in the 21 century. Peking University has played a key role in the process of modernization in China.
