11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis:
a) The research results This thesis has:
- Overviewed theoretical and practical issues concerning the studies of idiomatic expressions (IEs) both in Vietnamese and English. On that ground, a set of criteria has been established for identifying these units.
- Surveyed, described and analyzed the structural characteristics of IEs in techno-scientific texts (TSTs) in English, studied their structure formation principles and determined their general structure models based on particular data extracted from English TSTs officially published.
- Analyzed the ways of forming the meaning of IEs in English TSTs. Determined the role of particles as a semantic regulator in forming the meaning of IEs in English.
- Surveyed and described grammatical functions of IEs in English TSTs.
- Analyzed the difficulties the Vietnamese are facing in dealing with English IEs and suggested how to translate English IEs into Vietnamese.
b) Scientific and practical value of the thesis
- In theory: Havingoverviewedthe achievements of previous linguistics researchers, and based on the results drawn from private research, this thesis has systematized and determined theoretical background, identifying criteria, structural, semantic and grammatical characteristics of IEs. Meanwhile, the addition to the thesis has made the concerned problem fully exposed.
- In practice: The thesis has brought a general but also more detailed viewpoint which is a great help in dealing with English IEs, overcoming the difficulties caused by IEs in English – Vietnamese translation, and gives contribution to improve the effectiveness of teaching and studying English for Vietnamese people.
12. Practical applicability, if any:
The research results may be applied to overcome the difficulties caused by English IEs and give contribution to:
- improving the effectiveness of teaching and learning English for Vietnamese people;
- improving the effectiveness and quality of text comprehension and English – Vietnamese translation.
13. Further research directions:
1. Further develop the theory on idiomatic expressions by doing research into the other kinds of English idiomatic expressions in comparison with those of Vietnamese;
2. Carry out research on how to put idiomatic expressions in teaching and studying English;
3. Continue the ministry-level research conducted in 2006 to complete the work “English – Vietnamese Dictionary of Phrasal Verbs”.
