11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis :
- The thesis has identified the distinctive features of the speech acts of hedging based on an analysis of the conditions of its use, the components of the hedging expressions and the more common forms of hedging expressions.
- The thesis has investigated and described the hedging expressions in terms of their grammatical structures and their grammatical-pragmatic functions, described the pragmatic functions of hedgings.
- The thesis has identified and described hedging acts as expressed in everyday interactions of Vietnamese people in light of theories of communication, conversation analysis and speech act theory.
- The hedging expressions in Vietnamese are classified into 2 groups: Hegding exprsesions about the utterances’ informative contents and hedging expressions about the perlocutionary force of the utterances. Hegding exprsesions about the utterances’ informative contents are the hedgings about the conversational maxims. Hedging expressions about the perlocutionary force of the utterances consist of hedgings about the illocutionary acts and politeness.
- The thesis has identified the basis for the formation and interpretation of hedgings in speech communications of Vietnamese people. These are the respect of the conversational maxims, the effects of the communication culture and the perceptions by the Vietnamese people.
12. Practical applicability:
The study on the speech act of hedging will contribute to a better understanding of cultural traits in the communicative behavior of Vietnamese people. The results of the study could be used to teach Vietnamese at school and to promote the effectiveness of communicative practices by individuals in different domains of social activities.
13. Further research directions: To study the speech act of hedging in comparison with other speech acts.
