11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis:
The result of the thesis is of scientific significance and practical application in the current context of Vietnamese universities moving towards a credit-based system.
The thesis systematizes and highlights some theoretical issues on educational programs and curricula: approach to course syllabus (CS) development, CS development models and principles, CS evaluation models and procedures. The thesis also makes an in-depth analysis of the CDIO approach towards CS development and research orientation. In light of the CDIO approach, the thesis focuses on the learning outcomes: clarifying what learning outcomes mean, how important they are, how applicable they are to CS development. It is the CS that provide students with knowledge and skills, values and practices. In the thesis a framework of Learning outcomes for Teachers Training Programme has been proposed.
For CS evaluation, the thesis has developed a set of seven criteria with 46 indicators and course manuals:1) Relevance (9 indicators);2) Sequence (7 indicators); 3) Integration (4 indicators); 4) Balance (8 indicators); 5) Coherence (5 indicators); 6) Currence (6 indicators), and 7) Effectiveness (7 indicators). The thesis proposes and analyses the procedures for CS evaluation and assigns responsibilities for managing this process. Simultaneously, surveys are conducted on the procedures for CS evaluation among faculty members, administrators and students in a number of universities in Vietnam.
12. Practical applicability
CS management in higher education should be under strict and comprehensive implementation at every stage: Design – Implementation – Evaluation. Therefore, further research will focus on the management of CS implementation (course teaching) in a credit-based system. This is crucial to ensuring the high quality of a course and school training as well.
