11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis:

The thesis is the first research in Vietnam which focuses on India’s foreign policy towards Southeast Asia in the period of 1947-1964 in terms of theoretical and realistic foundations of the policy, the contents (goals and principles), the process of implementation, the responses by Southeast Asian countries, results and impacts, characteristic and the relationship between the policy in the period of 1947-1964 and the following periods (1991-2017).

The thesis is different from other works by applying both the approaches of idealism and realism to explain India’s foreign policy towards Southeast Asia in the period of 1947-1964. Thanks to these, it discovers and demonstrates the footprint and consistence of the principle to carry out India’s foreign policy towards Southeast Asia since its independence.

12. Practical applicability, if any:

The thesis is the systematic research on India’s foreign policy towards Southeast Asia in the period of 1947-1964. Therefore, it is one of meaningful references for the research fields such as Southeast Asian Studies, Indian Studies, International Relations and Historical Studies.

At present, Asian Pacific in general and ASEAN in particular is playing as the central role of India’s Look East Policy and Act East Policy. By researching India’s foreign policy towards Southeast Asia in the period of 1947-1964 as the background period of India’s relations with Southeast Asia in the contemporary period, the thesis helps enhance the mutual understanding, between Southeast Asia and India as well as Vietnam and India.

In addition to these, exploring the relationship and the consistence of the principle to implement India’s foreign policy through periods of ancient times, the period of 1947-1964, and contemporary period is one of the foundations for decision makers in both Southeast Asian countries in general and Vietnam in particular to make policies which are more suitable and effective for relations between Southeast Asian countries and India.
