11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis:

This thesis has reached a number of valuable results which could contribute to the academic system both domestically and internationally.

First, the thesis enriched the insights on the relationship between manufacturing strategy and firm performance of manufacturers. While research on manufacturing strategy is still limited in Asian countries, this thesis helped fill part of this gap by taking place in Vietnam, an emerging country with strong potential in manufacturing sector.

Second, the application of research across countries, especially from Western to Eastern cultures usually is faced with challenges due to local differences. Therefore, a study on manufacturing strategy does bring highly on-point contribution to Vietnamese academia, especially when manufacturing strategy is not yet studied by a good number of local scholars.

Third, the author proposed an analytical framework combining different components of manufacturing strategy including both competitive priorities and strategic choices, while most of previous studies usually only employed either competitive priorities or strategic choices. Moreover, the analytical framework of this thesis does not only examine the relationship between manufacturing strategy and firm performance but also the internal interactions between the components of manufacturing strategy.

Forth, the use of technological factors within manufacturing strategy research is also something new among global academia. Chatha and Butt (2015) claimed that the topic of technology choices has been highly overlooked in previous studies, especially in regions outside the Northern America and Europe.

And finally, this thesis has brought a new approach, more multiple than previous studies on manufacturing strategy and its impact on firm performance. More specifically, the thesis employed both qualitative and quantitative methods, both primary and secondary data, both domestic and international data, on different aspects of manufacturing strategy, to enrich the insights of the concept and its relationship with firm performance.

In the end, the thesis has pointed out the positive relationship between manufacturing strategy and firm performance at manufacturers in Vietnam. Meanwhile, the thesis also illustrated the remarkable role of technology aspect in terms of realizing and implementing manufacturing strategy and improving firm performance. The thesis also made a number of valuable suggestions for manufacturers to advance manufacturing strategy practices, upgrade technological application and better off firm performance.

12. Practical applicability:

This thesis assists managers in understanding further the local practices of manufacturing strategy as well as the relationship between manufacturing strategy and firm performance at manufacturers in Vietnam. From there, those in management positions or working in manufacturing functions and industries would have a viable framework for when they need to review, assess their manufacturing activities under the strategic lens. Firms would also be more aware of the possible significant impacts on firm performance that many activities might have when realizing manufacturing strategy.

On the other hand, this research also brought a number of insightful recommendations regarding management and strategy for Vietnamese manufacturers to properly construct and execute their manufacturing strategy from top management down to implementing functions. The thesis offers also interesting international benchmarks for Vietnamese manufacturers to put their situation in perspectives. And most of all, this thesis gave local manufacturers an initial guideline on how to start their technological upgrade journey to join the Industry 4.0 megatrend.

13. Further research directions:

Based on the results of this thesis, meanwhile aiming at improving the limitations of this researh, the author proposes several directions for further research as follows:

First, the design of the questionnaire used in this thesis needs to be standardized to better suit the topic of manufacturing strategy. Besides, quantitative data of firm performance could be extracted from numerical financial results of manufacturers. In doing so, measuring of manufacturing strategy and firm performance would be more objective and precise, even though the standardization process could be a tough challenge.

Second, future qualitative research should aim at firms that have had manufacturing strategy together with technological applications formally implemented. This would help ensure better the discussion quality, and the role of manufacturing strategy and technological aspects would also be displayed more vividly.

Third, the sample size of this research has been limited at 25 respondents thus, in the future should be expanded further to ensure the sample’s representativeness and the reliability of the analysis.

Finally, this thesis has illustrated the significant role of technology within manufacturing enterprises. Therefore, futhre research should aims at study further to find out how firms could successfully bring in technology to take part more strongly within Industry 4.0 and improve firm performance.
