7. Official thesis title: Research and evaluation of the multiple-benefits potential of treatment solution for concentrated pig waste using biogas technology in some localities in the North and North Central Vietnam

8. Major: Land and water environments                                       9. Code: 9440301.01

10. Supervisors: Assoc.Prof.Dr. Luu Duc Hai

                           Dr. Do Nam Thang

11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis

- Determined and initially calculated  multiple-benefit potential in pig waste treatment by biogas technology: For households: environmental benefits (reducing GHGs emissions and improving water and air environments, waste reduction, and reducing deforestation), energy benefits, agricultural benefits, health benefits; For farms: environmental benefits (improving water environment, reducing GHGs emissions, improving air environment, reducing waste, reducing deforestation), energy benefits, agricultural benefits.

- Calculation results of multiple-benefit potential of pig waste treatment using biogas technology are as follows:

+ Household size: a biogas cellar with average volume of 15.03 m3 has brought the benefit of 7,545,984 VND/cellar/year, in which potential revenue from selling GHGs emission reduction certificates is  1,388,785 VND/cellar/year (potential for GHGs emission reduction is 10.88 tCO2/ year), energy consumption expense saving is 3,743,199 VND/cellar/year, expense of chemical fertilizer saving is 1,164,000 VND/cellar/year and health expense saving is 1,250,000 VND/ cellar/year.

+ Total potential benefits on farm scale is up to 100,000,000 VND/farm/year.

+ The total-benefit potential of biogas technology applied to treat pig waste for the period of gestation sows is 9.648.077 VND/pig/year, of sows are  8,806,307 VND/pig/year, of piglets are 9,535,775 VND/pig/year and of porkers are 12,000,044 VND/pig/year.

+ Estimated multiple-benefit potential of biogas with household scale (15.03m3) in 2017 is 3,882 million VND. Multiple-benefits of biogas technology with biogas recovery when applying waste treatment to pigs and sows in 2017 in Vietnam, estimated according to multiple-benefit results of biogas technology on farm scale for each stage of pig development, are 337,863 billion VND and 43,201 billion VND.

- Proposed solutions to enhance and expand the effective use of multiple-benefits of biogas technology in pig waste treatment including planning for concentrated livestock waste management, strengthening environmental management for new rural area, increasing the use of biogas as renewable energy source, the group of solutions to enhance response to climate change.

12. Practical applicability, if any: The results of the thesis have important practical implications in orienting solutions for pig waste management in Vietnam, while effectively applying biogas technology as well as promoting the benefits that this technology towards the goal of sustainable development, adaptation to climate change.

13. Further research directions, if any

- A number of other benefits of biogas technology for social problems in rural areas in Vietnam should be considered and selected the method of calculating the value of benefits.

- The calculation coefficients are applied in calculating the volume of GHG emission reduction of households and farms such as VSLT, y (evaporation solids of livestock), MS% BL, y, AF (the percentage of contribution to the solution to the reduction of the case) needs to be specifically studied in Vietnamese conditions to have more appropriate and realistic values.

- The specific studies on epidemiological investigations to assess the specific health benefits due to the application of biogas technology in the treatment of animal waste need to be researched.
