11. Summary on the new findings of the PhD thesis:

The thesis represents a case study on the linguistic situation in an ethnic minority area in the Northwest region of Vietnam, more precisely, the language situation of the Hmong ethnic community in Bac Yen district, Son La province. The finding results obtained throughout the thesis show the new aspects as the following:

- Have approached the content of linguistic situations from three criteria in term of quantity, quality and linguistic attitude. The thesis has help systematize and clarify in term of academic aspects towards some crucial concepts of sociolinguistics: language situations, bilingual/multilingual, language competence, mother tongue, second language, language exposure and language attitudes, etc.

- The study of the linguistic situation in the Hmong ethnic minority region plays a very important role. The language matters in the Hmong community in Vietnam before and nowadays have been influencing enormously to the socio-economic development of this ethnic community. The picture of the linguistic situation of the Hmong community in Bac Yen district, Son La province has been clearly, lively and in details described in the thesis. The finding results of this thesis have contributed certain value in terms of theory for the sociolinguistics as well as practical aspects for plan-making and performing language policy in the Hmong ethnic region in Vietnam.

12. Applicable ability in reality

- The results of the thesis can be a useful reference for studies in linguistics, ethnology, sociology, especially in sociolinguistics of the Hmong ethnic group. The thesis can also be a valuable reference for managers, policy makers for the language as well as policy for education in the Mong ethnic region.

13. Future research directions

- The results of the study in this thesis suggest several directions as the following: (1) about how to improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning Hmong in general and in the “New General Education Program in particular”; (2) About how to improve the quality of teaching the Vietnamese language for Hmong students in Bac Yen; (3) On the linguistic ecology with the sustainable development of society of a multilingual community; (4) On the language associated with tourism development in ethnic minority areas.
