VNU is one of the leading training and research institutions in the field of climate change and sustainable development. With its strength of interdisciplinary research, in recent times, VNU has joined forces with the Government in a series of activities to respond to the impacts of climate change to provide high-quality human resources and essential applied solutions in response to current climate change.

In 2023, VNU participated in organizing many major conferences and forums on climate change and sustainable development.

VNU Institute of Natural Resources and Environmental Studies chaired the consultation workshop “Promoting policies and practice on climate change adaptation through intergenerational dialogue in Vietnam". The workshop highlighted the role of youth (their knowledge, discovery and action) in adapting to climate change; identified approaches, information and resources that stakeholders can learn from the Project to develop future policies/initiatives focused on action to respond to the challenge of climate change.

The Institute of Policy and Management, VNU University of Social Sciences and Humanities, organized the international workshop on “Social changes and science, technology and innovation management issues in Vietnam”. The workshop aimed at analyzing the relationship between social change and the development of science, technology and innovation; and management issues of science, technology and innovation in Vietnam in the context of integration with the region and the world under the impacts of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and current strong social changes. The Institute also organized the international workshop "An indicator framework for sustainable communities towards socio-ecological transformation: A case study in Vietnam". Through exchange activities and sharing research results, scientists discussed socio-ecological transformation issues linked with community development in Vietnam.

VNU University of Economics and Business held the seminar "Carbon emissions and energy transition" to discuss lecturers’ research results related to carbon emissions and energy transition, and get opinions from domestic and international experts on the mentioned topic as well as to promote lecturers sharing professional experiences and expanding international cooperation networks.

In addition to academic activities, professional exchange and implementation of training programs on climate change and sustainable development, VNU has proactively promoted the construction of a green, smart and sustainable university town in Hoa Lac. In particular, VNU has promoted the development of the university town infrastructure and landscape, technical infrastructures and tree planting. VNU youth actively joined forces to build a modern, ecological, clean and beautiful university campus. Furthermore, on March 8, 2023, VNU issued Decision No. 688/QD-DHQGHN on promulgating VNU town ICT Infrastructure Framework in Hoa Lac, version 1.0.
