On September 29th, 2020, VNU solemnly organized the 5th Patriotic Emulation Congress for the 2020-2025 period. At the congress, VNU honorably received the Government's Emulation Flag for excellent achievements in its performance, leading the national patriotic emulation movement in 2019; 3 teams under VNU successfully completed their 2018-2019 academic year tasks and led the MOET’s patriotic emulation movement, namely VNU University of Engineering and Technology, VNU HUS High School for Gifted Students and VNU ULIS Foreign Languages Specialized School.
Over the past 5 years, VNU has had 7 teams awarded the Government's Emulation Flags, 34 teams awarded Emulation Flags by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), 2 teams and 3 individuals awarded the First Class Labour Orders, 3 teams and 9 individuals awarded the Second Class Labour Orders, 4 teams and 18 individuals awarded the Third Class Labour Orders, 8 teams and 46 individuals awarded the Certificates of Merit by the Prime Minister, 141 individuals recognized as MOET-level Emulation Fighters, 106 teams and 297 individuals awarded the Certificates of Merit by the Minister of Education and Training, and 25 individuals awarded Medals for the Cause of Education.

On November 13th, 2020, Party Secretary General and State President Nguyen Phu Trong signed Decision No. 2015/QĐ-CTN on awarding the title of "Labour Hero" in the Doi Moi Period to VNU HUS High School for Gifted Students in recognition of the contribution of the school’s staff, teachers and students during the past 10 years. Previously, for the first time, the Division of Mathematics and Computer Science, the forerunner of VNU HUS High School for Gifted Students, received the title of Labour Hero in 2005.
Also in 2020, People’s Teacher, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Ngoc - Director of the Centre for Hanoi Studies and Development under VNU Institute of Vietnamese Studies and Development Sciences, was honoured as "Outstanding Citizen of the Capital". Earlier on, some other VNU scientists including Prof. Dr. Phan Huy Le, Assoc.Prof. Dr. Ha Dinh Duc, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thua Hy... were also honoured with this title.
