11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis:

- The thesis clarified the theoretical foundations of Japanese cultural

diplomacy in general, both internal and external factors affecting Japanese cultural diplomacy towards Southeast Asia in particular.

- The thesis synthesized the process of formation and development, types,

organizations, funds, objectives and main contents of Japan's cultural diplomacy.

- The thesis presented the objectives, contents, and the implementation of

Japanese cultural diplomacy policy towards Southeast Asia through two major periods 1977 - 2001 and 2001 – 2016. Based on this the thesis tried to characterize, and to compare these two stages to see the changes as well as the advantages and disadvantages of Japanese cultural diplomacy towards Southeast Asia.

- The thesis synthesizes the findings from the sociological survey in some

Southeast Asian countries, and can assess the attitudes of the Southeast Asian people towards Japanese cultural diplomacy.

- Based on the world’s political situation, the interests of the Japanese

government and the needs of the Southeast Asian people, the thesis deduced the prospect of Japanese cultural diplomacy towards region in the future.
