New academic year ceremony at VNU School of Medicine and Pharmacy: Succeeding VNU’s heroic tradition
In the morning of September 15, 2012, at Nguy Nhu Kon Tum conference hall, VNU School of Medicine and Pharmacy solemnly held the opening ceremony of 2012-2013 academic year for freshmen majoring in General Medicine and Pharmacy.

Presenting at the ceremony were Prof.Dr. Mai Trong Nhuan - VNU President, Prof.Dr. Nguyen Huu Duc - VNU Vice President; scientists in life science in and outside VNU; representatives of Ministry of Health, Hanoi Medical University, Hanoi University of Pharmacy, Bach Mai Hospital, clinics, pharmacy enterprises, some sponsors as well as many scientists and teaching staff in and outside VNU, particularly the presence of about 100 freshmen in the first cohort of VNU School of Medicine and Pharmacy.
VNU President congratulated lecturers and students of VNU School of Medicine and Pharmacy in the first cohort of general practitioners and pharmacists. He believed that the ceremony would not only mark a significant milestone to the School but also play an important role in completing VNU model of a comprehensive multi-disciplinary university with Medicine and Pharmacy as peak scientific fields. Also, he noted that the School should follow the orientation of basic science and high technology based development; quickly and comprehensively integrate into the common home of VNU; confidently and actively cooperate with units in and outside VNU; enhance international cooperation; develop the staff to meet the requirements of building a research school; and promote scientific research for medical and pharmaceutical products bearing the specific characteristics of VNU.
In his opening speech, Prof.Dr. Truong Viet Dung – Rector of VNU School of Medicine and Pharmacy stressed that the School was a training and research unit as well as a service provider, acting as a linkage with other natural science majors and disciplines, with the point of convergence in applied medicine and pharmacy. Students would be trained to be the practical doctors and pharmacists who could undertake the tasks of medical staff as per standards of the medical branch. Besides, they would have opportunities to approach VNU’s scientific research units to improve their research capacity, particularly in fundamental research, so as to become scientist doctors and scientist pharmacists after graduation.
At the ceremony, experiences on the glory and hardship of the medical branch were shared to the students by VNU Honorary Doctor, Prof. Peter Langer, a famous scientist in the field of organic chemistry in Germany and Europe, by Prof. Le Nam Tra – Former Vice President of Hanoi Medical University and by Prof. Dang Hanh De – Vietnam Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery.
Also on this occasion, the freshmen of the School’s first cohort had a chance to meet and learn from leading professors and scientists in medicine and pharmacy. The top students in the 2012 entrance exam were awarded scholarships from the Odon Vallet Foundation. HelVietMed also offered scholarships for students with disadvantaged backgrounds and many gifts from BV Pharma and other sponsors were given to new students.
