VNU VJU: Improving student learning support activities

On February 6, 2023, Vietnam Japan University (VJU) held an early spring meeting with students attending undergraduate and master courses including a dialogue with the University’s Directorate Board. It is expected that from 2023, the University will strengthen these dialogue meetings to improve student learning support activities. The meeting and dialogue has the participation of Rector Furuta Motoo, Standing Vice Rector Nguyen Hoang Oanh, managers of the Academics and Student Affairs Office, head teachers, faculty assistants, program assistants and students studying at the university.

fter Rector Futura’s New Year’s greeting speech, the Rectorate Board gave lucky money to all available students. The Rectorate Board then spent most of their time providing information, listening and giving detailed answers to almost 20 questions raised by the students before as well as right at the dialogue session. The main topics of interest to the students include outcome standards for foreign language, learning pathway, balance between compulsory and optional subjects, internship opportunities, extra-curricular activities, sports fields, more canteens, etc.

“First of all, it must be affirmed that VJU aims to train high-quality human resources. Not any institution can turn you into talented people but only you yourself.  We do not force you to learn, also cannot force you to become talented but you.  What VJU can do for you is to try to provide an environment and a team of lecturers; provide support, manage and recognize your progress.  Uuniversity level requires you to be active in the learning process.  As Mr. Furuta just said, each of you will develop in a different way. VJU does not provide or create a series of training products of 400 identical people. If so, you will not have a competitive advantage and therefore, each of you must make efforts”, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Oanh, Vice Rector of VJU emphasized.

“Regarding the balance between electives and compulsory units, recently, ChatGPT has been widely discussed. Chat GPT only helps you to do the work but does not help you to understand the lesson. It is only the beginning, not the end. Take advantage of such tools to improve your knowledge. All tools cannot replace your own knowledge. In my opinion, if I could go back, I would try to study as broadly as possible. However, “broad” here is to understand, not to cram knowledge or try to remember. You need to understand its meaning in order to apply it. By all means, the balance between deep learning in one area and wide learning in some areas is up to you, but learning broadly must also be to the point where you can understand some basic concepts so that you can move on later.” Dr. Nguyen Hoang Oanh added.
