11. Summary of the results of the thesis:

Through the research process, we have drawn some of the main conclusions as follows:

In Chinese, there are many expressions of purpose relationship such as: “为了”, “以便免得”, “以免旨在为的是是为了”... And the sentences that indicate purposes are the high frequency ones, widely used in both spoken and written language, and also of no less complexity because of its semantic diversity and structure. In addition, due to the interference of the language, Vietnamese learners inevitably face several obstacles in the acquisition and use of this language, which means they are likely to make mistakes in the application process.

In order to complete the study, we conducted a questionnaire survey on the second, third, and fourth- year students majoring in Chinese language at the University of Foreign Languages – Vietnam National University - Hanoi, School of Foreign Languages - Thai Nguyen University, and Department of Foreign Languages - Hai Phong University. Results reveal that the most common errors by students are confusions among different words that all indicate purpose, their position in the sentence, and the pragmatic misuse as the result of the negative influence of the mother tongue and the difficulty of this language point.

As a study of the acquisition of second language, the results of the field survey on the other hand indicates that students have progressed: at first, they made many mistakes and used words expressing purpose with the absence of rationale, and then fewer mistakes are made and they used the language consciously (with theoretical basis).

Furthermore, the findings of this thesis were figured out based on in-depth investigations into textbooks, analysis of teachers’ beliefs on adequate teaching methodology, and therefore recommendations for teachers and learners of Chinese to have possibly best and most effective lessons have been made.

12. Applicability

- Error analysis is one of the most important aspects of studying the acquisition of second language, and the thorough and rigorous fault analysis will help learners reach in greater depth with the target language, hence conducive to teaching the language. The research results contribute to the theoretical and practical basis for the acquisition of language, specifically the expressions of purpose in modern Chinese.

- The research results of the thesis can be applied in the process of studying and teaching Chinese, especially the words that express purpose.

13. Subsequent research directions:

Study on student’s errors and acquisition of other linguistic aspects, including vocabulary and grammar in Chinese.
