11. Summary of the new findings of the dissertation:

- The dissertation contributes an additional case study of the socioeconomic changes of villages in Dong Son, Thanh Hoa province during the Renovation period through the specific cases of Nhoi, Nhue Sam, and Van Do villages. By means of comparative study, the dissertation has provided comprehensive and general insights into the Dong Son area in the process of economic and social transformation since 1986 up to now. Since then, the specific characteristics of the area have been clarified, generalized into general points and particular points in order to continue conducting comparative studies with other villages and regions.

- From the application of the methodology of Area Studies, Interdisciplinary Method and comparative studies amongst the three villages of Nhoi, NhueSam and Van Do, the dissertation has shown the varying degrees of economic and social variables amongst villages in Dong Son. From these considerations, the conclusion was made on the basis of analysis of socio economic changes to explain the similarities between villages in the Dong Son area with the common characteristics of Vietnamese villages in the North and Northern Central Coast. At the same time, the thesis also pointed out the differences in socioeconomic changes from 1986 to present between villages in the Dong Son area and other areas. Similarities and differences of the three villages of  Nhoi, Nhue Sam and Van Do were also analyzed and thoroughly examined to provide a picture of other socioeconomic development of Vietnamese village in recent times.

- Based on the system of document surveyed, collected and studied in and outside the studied area, the dissertation has clarified the economic and social changes of Dong Son villages. The changes are manifested in economic activities, occupational structure, labor and employment, changes to income and living standards of Dong Son people; changing village space and population structure; transformations in family relationships - ancestry - community; changes into lifestyle and the demand for enjoyment. The analyzed characteristics of economic and social change explained the reason why the three cases of study named Nhoi, Nhue Sam and Van Do have the same development opportunities, and starting point but there are also differences in the scope, the level of change and development in the innovation and integration time.

12. Applicability:

- The completed dissertation will enrich the materials to study socio-economic field in other localities all over the country, especially in communal villages in “Doi Moi” period.

- Research results of the dissertation add scientific arguments to policy making and solutions for the sustainable socio-economic development in Dong Son commune in particular and Thanh Hoa in general in the process of industrialization, urbanization and globalization nowadays. At the same time, there are specific development solutions which suitable for each type of communal villages.

13. Further research directions

- Research the transformation of communal village cultures under impacts of socio-economic changes in “Doi moi” period.

- Research a comparison between communal villages in Dong Son area and those in North Central and Northern Vietnam.
