6. Changes in academic process:

7. Official thesis title: Study on the development of quantitative analysis of paraquat in human plasma and its application in diagnosis and treatment of the patients with acute paraquat poisoning.

8. Major: Analytical Chemistry    9. Code: 62 44 01 18

10. Supervisors: Assoc. Prof., Dr. Ta Thi Thao

Assoc. Prof., Dr. Ha Tran Hung

11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis

- The HPLC/DAD analytical method with simple sample preparation procedures has been developed for determination of paraquate in uman plasma. This procedure could be used as a standard method for toxic control laboratories at central or provincial levels and cross-referencing method for the development of new analytical method (CE-C4D)

The new analytical method (CE-C4D) for determination of paraquat in human plasma samples has been sucesssfully developed and analyzed followed by solid phase extraction (SPE) using C18 separation column. The simple and low cost instrument can be easily equipped for local hospitals and local medical facilities and be useful for the rapid diagnosis of acute PQ poisoning diagnose, poisoning severity, predict mortality, evaluate the effectiveness of hemoperfusion and develop a protocol for hemoperfusion therapy.

The data of PQ concentrations in more than 400 samples of 199 PQ poisoning patients treated at the Bach Mai Poison Control Center were obtained by two methods and allowed doctors to predict the viability of PQ patient response, help the doctors evaluate the effectiveness of hemoperfusion and develop a protocol for hemoperfusion therapy.

 12. Practical applicability, if any:

The CE-C4D method with the advantages of the simple instrument has been widely applied in accordance with the socio-economic conditions in Vietnam. The analytical procedures presented in this thesis are accuracy, cost-effective and easy to use, thus suitable for quantitative analysis of paraquat in plasma at both center hospitals and local medical facilities. The plasma paraquat concentrations that were presented for severity of paraquat poisoning and decrease significantly during hemoperfusion therapy are necessary and provide supports for physicians in the management of paraquat poisoning.

13. Further research directions, (if any): Simplify the analytical process and enhance the sensitivity of CE-C4D method.
