11. Summary of dissertation’s findings:

From ethnological/anthropolical perspectives, this dissertation comprehensively examines Đan Lai people’s traditional livelihoods, livelihood changes in Con Cuông district, Nghệ An province and their coping with effects of State’s policies on their their socio-cultural lives.

The dissertation shows to how, what extend and in what ways inadequacies and limits of State policies and supports to the Dan Lai people are, and proposes practical recommendations for policy-making and implementation to achieve sustainable livelihood development of Đan Lai people.

In addition, the dissertation contains a good source of rich and up-to-date information collected from the field about Pù Mát National Park, Đan Lai people, and their livelihood changes at the time under study and in the past.

The dissertation’s above results directly contribute to promoting research on Đan Lai people in Con Cuông district, Nghệ An province in particular and in Vietnam in general.

12. Applicability of the dissertation:

The dissertation is a good source of reference for basic and applied research on a number of key issues that are of great importance to the Party and State in contemporary Viet Nam, including ethnic minorities, problems of development and livelihood change in ethnic regions...

The dissertation can also be used for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in ethnology/anthropology and other disciplines in social sciences and humanities that cover ethnic issues, ethnic policies and development in Vietnam.

The dissertation has proposed various policy recommendations, which based on practical findings, for government agencies at both local and national levels in their management and addressing ethnic minority issues, sustainable development, and conservation of natural resources in the area under study, including Pù Mát National Park and Đan Lai people’s livelihoods now and in the future.

13. Future research directions:

The dissertation raises a number of important issues that need be further examined, like using specialized and interdisciplinary approaches to examine more comprehensively Dan Lai group in Con Cuông district, Nghệ An province from key aspects of economic, culture, societal and environmental in relation to state policies on the protection of forests, natural resources at both local and national levels for sustainable development goals.
