Dear Prof. Dr. Susan C. Schwab, Ambassador, the former Vice-Chancellor of the University System of Maryland,

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today, I am very pleased and honored to confer the Honorary Doctor Degree of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the most prestigious prize of VNU to Prof. Dr. Susan C. Schwab, the former United States Trade Representative, former President and CEO of the University System of Maryland (USM) Foundation in recognition of her valuable contributions to the development of cooperative linkages and friendships with Vietnam and Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
Susan C. Schwab has been an active politician and educator. She has spent many years in engaging with political and economical issues of the United States. As the United States Trade Representative, Prof. Dr. Susan C. Schwab was actively engaged in the development of US strategy in multilateral and bilateral trade negotiations . Especially, Prof. Susan Schwab has played very important role in trade negociation between Vietnam and the US.
It is worth noting that Prof. Dr. Susan C. Schwab has also dedicated herself in educational affairs. She served as Dean of the University of Maryland School of Public Policy, as well as President and CEO of the University System of Maryland (USM) Foundation and USM Vice Chancellor for Advancement. She has published various books relating to trade relations, trade politics and public policy education.
As with Vietnam, Prof. Susan Schwab has shown special interest in furthering cooperation in trade. The Vietnamese people, its rich national culture and rising market economy have immense attractions to her that have brought her to Vietnam on many occasions and made her a renowned US trade representative among others. Accepting the warm invitation extended by Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Prof. Susan Schwab come back to Vietnam this time as a scholar and a speaker for various issues relating to US policy in trade and its influences for Vietnam. She would be willing to make full use of her prestigious experiences and knowledges in promoting the academic activities and relationship with Vietnam. Since many years, Prof. Susan Schwab has been highly appreciated by Vietnamese leaders, policy makers, entrepreneurs. Today, the Honorary Doctor Degree again acknowledges the excellence in her prominent works as well as her strong interest in developing already existing effective cooperative links between American universities and VNU and other universities in Vietnam.
Driven by the overall policy that Vietnam wishes to make friends with all nations for peace, stability and development, and originating from our good national traditions, VNU has adopted a line of developing international cooperative links and integrating into the world higher education community aimed at striving for the quality level of top universities in the region and the world over. VNU always values and appreciates effective cooperation extended from enthusiastic and dedicated organisations and individuals represented by Prof. Susan Schwab’s extraordinary example.

I would like to avail myself of this opportunity again to congratulate and thank Prof. Susan Schwab for all the good feelings and tremendous contributions that she has spared for Vietnam. We strongly believe that with her commitments, wills and connection, the cooperation in training and research between VNU and University System of Maryland as well as between Vietnamese universities with US collegiate partners will be further strengthened and she will make great contributions in developing the fruitful relationship between our two nations: Vietnam and the United States. We wish that in difference steps of development of VNU, Prof. Susan Schwab will always be, as VNU distinguished honorary doctor, a senior advisor and mostly a great friend.
On behalf of all professors, staff and students of VNU, I would like to warmly congratulate and express our heart-felt thanks to Prof. Dr. Susan C. Schwab and offer her warmest congratulations on this very special occasion.
I would like to wish Prof. Dr. Susan C. Schwab good health, great happiness and success.
May the cooperation between VNU and the United States universities be further developed for the benefit and prosperity of our two countries.
