Success in Designing and Manufacturing Video Encoding Microchip VENGME H.264/AVC
In May 2015, the Research group of VNU University of Engineering and Technology’s Smart integrated systems Target laboratory publicized their video encoding microchip VENGME H.264/AVC @ 2014 product kit (VENGME H.264/AVC for short). This is the first product of its kind successfully designed and made in Vietnam.

VENGME H.264/AVC is the result of the VNU-level scientific research project encoded QGĐA.10.02, headed by Assoc. Prof. Trần Xuân Tú and entitled "Researching and designing video encoding kit for new generation multimedia devices". The research team has designed and built a hardware architecture to perform video encoding functions compatible with the H.264/AVC standards for mobile devices. The successful design was sent to the GlobalFoundries to be manufactured with 130 nm CMOS semiconductor technology.

According to Assoc. Prof. Trần Xuân Tú, video encoding microchip VENGME H.264/AVC is a microchip generation most widely used in the world; it is a high-complexity chip integrating over 2 million logical ports (equivalent to 8 million transistors). The microchip can handle real time video resolutions up to HD 720P at 100 MHz frequency with fairly low power consumption (53 MW).

The Project’s technology product has also been partly shared with the Institute of Electronics and Informatics under the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA-Leti) for its further development towards deep power consumption reduction - one of the increasingly strict requirements for green-technology-oriented mobile devices.

The designing of VENGME H.264/AVC is aimed at such applications as security cameras, traffic cameras, field surveillance cameras or simply buildings, schools, public places, etc. surveillance cameras as well as such mobile devices as smart phones, video recorders. VNU University of Engineering and Technology and Sài Gòn Smart Solutions Co., Ltd.  have transferred this product’s technology and cooperated in developing applied equipments.

VNU Vice President Nguyễn Hữu Đức remarks that the autonomously designing of multifunction electronic microchips and the updating of most advanced technologies of the world will help enhance the value of electronic products made in Vietnam with up-to-30% profit level. In addition, the success in researching and manufacturing VENGME H.264/AVC contributes to the training of high-quality human resources for the knowledge-based economy; reduces electronic components and technology solutions trade deficit; creates products having a great influence and impact on the development of the economy with competitive advantages on the domestic and international markets, contributing to the accelerating of our country’s industrialization and modernization process.

In particular, the fact that Vietnamese scientists have successfully designed and manufactured microchip VENGME H.264/AVC opens up a perspective of mastering electronic technology for national defense security, designing and manufacturing important electronic microchips in weapons systems, military equipments, target locating systems and information security. These are the products that are not to be ordered or designed and manufactured by foreign countries.
